Hmmmm. Not sure if it's still around, but Fog City Diner was fun, very casual and quite yummy. They specialize in "small plates", kind of like tapas, but not Spanish. So, two people can share several things, which is a fun way to taste a lot of stuff. menu was varied and creative, too.

For exceptional Chinese - unlike any I've ever had, try Brandy Ho's on Columbus, in Chinatown. They have an open kitchen which is nice. Their specialty is their smoked meats (rather unusual for Chinese, I think) - ham, chicken and duck. Very casual, reasonably priced but decor was more modern than you'd expect at a Chinese eating establishemnt - a decent amount of funk.

My favorite moderate priced resaurant in SFO is Tin Pan at 2223 Market Street. It's casual, noodles and funky asian. Try the fire cracker salmon rolls and I love the potstickers....they have a sampler plate.
