SF is truly an amazing place to eat. My favorites:
- Aqua, on Battery street. Terrific seafood, always fresh but maybe more importantly, some of the most interesting approaches I've had. Atmosphere, unfortunately, is that irritating loud, bustly kind that places seem to be into nowadays.

- Boulevard, on the Embarcadero near the Hyatt Regency. Stunning food,
more refined (and therefore perhaps less creative) than Aqua, and
more of an all-around place, not so focused on seafood. Atmosphere
here is great: large tables, quiet, comfortable, elegant.

- Hampton Place, near the Moscone Center. Run by two ex-sous chefs
from Postrio, truly terrific food, a little loud.

Other ideas:
- Greens; amazing view. The best vegetarian food you'll find, but (IMHO) it does suffer from being vegetarian. Their Saturday prix fixe dinner is often very nice.

- Chez Panisse, Berkeley. Possibly the mother-ship of contemporary
California food. Very expensive ($75 prix fixe, I think) but I've
heard it's worth it. I was a graduate student while in Berkeley, so
only went on Monday night, when the understudies do a smaller, but
still delectable, meal. Service and atmosphere are impeccable; food
was great too. The cafe upstairs is cheaper, also great, but with an
emphasis on simple food prepared perfectly.

- Sent Sovi, Saratoga (south bay). Probably too long a trip to be
worthwhile, but when we lived in Mountain View we found there was
little reason to trek to the city - this place, nicely situated in a
small, old house, had food to rival all of the above. They remodeled
about a year ago, and I haven't been since; can't tell you what if
 anything's changed.

- Postrio, SF. I was only there once, and it's been about six years
now, but I still remember the meal, and it was classic
Puck. Interesting combinations, loud ambiance, and perhaps more
 emphasis on creativity than execution.

Hope this helps - enjoy!
