I live in Sacramento. My recommendations are: 1. Fuji's at 13th & Broadway. A very nice place and a very good sushi bar. This is definitely a place parents would be comfortable in. 2. Megami Bento Ya on10th Street, between "j" and "k". Not the same ambiance as Fuji's. Sort of a sushi bar noir after 5 pm. Big servings, very reasonable prices. A favorite with cops. The neighborhood is sort of exciting after the civilians leave their offices for the day. Your mother in law would definitely clutch at her pocketbook in this neighorhood. Megami is very nice for a late lunch, say 2 'ish. Alan does screaming business between 11 am and 1 pm. 3. Mikuni 4323 Hazel Avenue. I haven't been but a friend of mine who lives out there says it's very good. He's a foodie, a doc, a diver, and knows tons about salt water fishes. I consider his opinions reliable. he says don't confuse this with Mifune which is on another one of the avenues out there in the north area. 4. I was disappointed with Sushi Sei (on Fair Oaks Boulevard), the last time I was there. Good luck. Sacramento sushi?
My personal favorite in Sacramento, California has so far been Mikuni (4323 Hazel Avenue, Folsom). Their fish is always very good and the place is always packed. The only thing I wish they did differently is that I find their sunomono too strongly flavored. I have had the Robata Grill (6301 Sunrise Boulevard, Citrus Heights) highly recommended for their sushi, as well as Yama Sushi (apparently one of the sushi chefs >from the Robata Grill started that one). Yama Sushi is at 1603 Douglas Boulevard in Roseville. I've never had a chance to try either one, but I look forward to giving them a shot. An interesting one just opened recently in Folsom. It's called Akio's (705 Gold Lake Drive). Their sushi is good for its type, which is sweet (!). Most of their sushi is very lightly marinated or something which makes it sweet. Their salmon sushi is smoked. I personally am not a fan of sweet sushi, so I'm not likely to go back. I would not recomment Kifune (on Greenback). I was served several pieces of sashimi that were not completely fresh. From what I have heard, Tokyo Sushi in Folsom has similar problems. Should you want to make your own sushi, I would recommend Oto's Japan Food (5770 Freeport Boulevard, Sacramento). It's a fairly large Japanese market with a pretty broad selection. There may be other good sushi places in Sacramento that I haven't run across yet (I just moved here in September), but Mikuni might be a nice place for you to start. It's the one place people most often recommended to me when I asked, and I've really enjoyed going there.
