We had an awful experience at the Rue de Paris in San Jose on our wedding anniversary - bad food, worse service, especially from the maitre 'd. We do, however, love French food. Anyone know a good French restaurant in the San Jose area?

Try La Foret in New Almaden. It's located in an old hotel which served this community over 100 years ago with a great view of the creek and the woods around. Good food, fair prices. This place definitely appears to be in the boonies, but in actuality it isn't. I recommend reservations. It's even a great place to take a stroll after dinner (provided it isn't too late--it gets pretty dark out there...), past the old graveyard and through the old historic mining community.

Actually, after thinking about it, a couple other good places are: Le Papillon Corner of Kiely and Saratoga, between 280 and Stevens Creek. Owned (at least last I heard) by the brother of the gentleman who owns La Foret....

Gervais
Corner of Park Ave.and Naglee, across from the Rosicrucian Museum Although Gervais no longer owns the place, from what I understand the quality is still there.

Pigalle
Los Gatos, on Santa Cruz Ave, just before Main, under Mountain Charlie's So, ok, I used to work here, BUT, it is a great little bistro, seats about 30 (may have expanded a bit), no reservations, last I heard, and there IS a line outside, so either be ready to wait or go early -- seems like we didn't get hit til about 6. Small menu, not too pricey, open for lunch (call on that), worth investigating. Be warned! We would do 90-100 dinners on the weekend--keep in mind we only seated 27 at the time (this was between 5:30 and 9:30).

There is also Mouton Noir and Mere Michelle in Saratoga, downtown on Hwy 9.

I'd be interested in hearing more about your experience at Rue de Paris (I work a couple blocks from there, a friend of mine worked there until recently--not anything weird, just found a higher paying job)--e-mail me if you don't want to splash it in the group (ahhhh....go ahead--what the hell....). Good eating.
