Where in Orange County?

The ultimate would be to limo to the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton Dana Point

Short of that, Bistango in Irvine has a terrific contemporary setting, and usually has great live background music. The food is upscale Cal-Continental.

Mr Stox in Anaheim <stadium area> is famous for its wine list and would be a more traditional Continental choice.

Congratulations to your dad, enjoy dinner, and let us know where you go!

I second Mr. Stox on Katella in Anaheim. We dined there before a concert at the Pond and I have to say the rack of lamb was the best I ever had. Good wine list too.

I also like Five Crowns in Corona Del Mar. While this is an old English Inn type restaurant and maybe not what you are looking for, I have had some of the best prime rib in OC there. But I think what makes the meal is there creamed spinach which is to die for....Great wine list and excellent service...hope this helps

I second the above and the third the other above, as well. Gulliver's is also a nice place near the John Wayne Airport, but may be a cut below what you are looking for. Clearly, the Ritz-Carlton Dana Point is in a different league. Also, take care that your mother would not be offended by servers dressed as English serving wenches in period attire with the low cut bosom of the day. Mr. Stox inevitably is mentioned as well when cost is no object is tossed into the fray. The Corner Pocket and its big brother in South Coast Village will fill the desire for German repast quite nicely. Zov's Bistro in Tustin would be a nice touch for a cozy lunch precursing, or following, the "money is no object" dinner event. Wofgang Puck's in either Irvine or South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa or Pascal's in Newport Beach would also fit the lunch scheme quite nicely and could do for dinner, as well. That is, if Pascal's is still doing well.
