My favorite in Monterey is Fresh Cream -- expensive, but the food and service are excellent, as is the wine list. Up until my last visit (August), I also liked Rio Grill in Carmel Valley. The food was flawed (e.g., a filet ordered medium rare came medium well) and the wine service was second-rate as well (e.g., a moldy-musty smelling chardonnay by the glass was relucrtantly replaced the first time, but when a third glass also proved disagreeable, they refused to replace it).

I greatly appreciate your effort in putting together that list of restaurants for me!

We went down to Monterey/Pacific Grove/etc. last weekend and had a fine meal at Fandango in Pacific Grove. The service was wonderful, the food was great (esp the fresh, fresh seafood, and the little extras (like a great big plate of olives set on the table) were nice. Also the prices were reasonable, for that area.

We tried to get reservations at Fresh Cream but none were to be had at such a late date -- but we did look at the menu and the prices were extraordinary, to say the least.

For breakfast, our favorite is always fresh smoked salmon on a sourdough roll with cream cheese from the Wharf in Monterey. Too bad there is no good place for a decent coffee on the Wharf...

Well, thanks again for your help.

One of my favorite moderately priced places is the Cafe Stravaganza found at the Crossroads Shopping Center, located at the last traffic light along Highway 1 at River Road before entering the Big Sur area.

Their menu consists of Mediterranean cuisine, some "California"-style dishes, pizza and appetizers. One of the two owners is a chef who has a recipe book for sale there as well. Their wine list includes selections from Monterey County vineyards. My favorite entree is the Chicken Tamarind with Pasta.

Also, another place I keep wanting to try is Clint Eastwood's Hog Breath Inn. It's located among the shops of Carmel.

We always enjoy Abalonetti's on the wharf in Monterey - casual, reasonable prices and excellent calamari. For breakfast in Carmel try Swiss Cafe - they have the best hollandaise! Fresh Cream in Monterey, the restaurant in the Monterey Bay Aquarium (not the cafeteria) and Highlands Inn (table #4) in Carmel have been recommended by others, though I haven't had a chance to try them. Also in Carmel a crab feed on Friday nights at Rancho Canada (located in a country club/golf course), price around $20/person.
