These are my favorite San Diego restaurants:

mexican food- alfonzo's in downtown La Jolla- great carne asada
fish- The Fish Market in Del Mar or downtown San Diego- they have fresh fish
 and a mesquite grill

Thai food- Spicies Thai in Del Mar

Chinese food- Mandarin House in La Jolla or Pacific Beach

Italian food- Jack and Guilio's in Old Town- great scampi and tortellini verde

none of these restaurants are terribly expensive and all have great food!

Okay but not great. On the whole, I prefer the Roberto's chain of
 taco/burrito shops to Alfonzo's. I don't think there is a really good
Mexican restaurant in La Jolla. I usually head for Eden Gardens in
the Solana Beach area for Mexican.

The Del Mar location is *much* better than the downtown location. The
downtown location sells view, not food.

 Never tried it.

Thai House on Convoy is pretty good. They'll make it so that it'll
singe your tongue if you ask them nicely.

 Never been there.

Our group tends to prefer Peking Palace in the University Towne Center
shopping mall or King's Garden out in Solana Beach. Ask them for Kung
 Pao Death!

Osteria Panevino, 722 Fifth Ave, downtown is my current favorite.
 Death by dessert.
