: I will be going to San Diego, staying in La Jolla. Can anyone recommend good but
: reasonably priced restaurants in the area, either mexican style or seafood? If

Whenever we're in San Diego we always make a point of going to ANDRE'S
PATIO. It is a Cuban place that has very nice homemade soups. Our
favorite dish is the Pierna de Puerco, pork served with a garlicy yucca
root and morros y Christinanos (black beans and rice). This is just a
small neighborhood place where the people are friendly and the food good.

Don't know the address (we just get there somehow). Its on Morena not
far from where the 5 and 8 freeways cross. Its about 1 mile north of the
8 and just east of the 5.

There is an Afghan place in San Diego, called Khyber Pass. The atmosphere
is ethnic but peaceful, and the prices range from about $6 to $12 for entrees.
The place is decorated with artifacts Afghanistan's history as well as with
portraits of Afghan bazaars etc. There is also a show room adjacent to the
restaurant where one can purchase Afghan hand-crafts.

The food is richly spiced but milder than Indian cuisine. Rice, curries,
kabobs, and vegetables prepared in tomato sauces comprise some of the items
on the menu. For dessert, I like the rice custard topped with crushed
 pistachios.

The address is 4647 Convoy; Phone 619 571 3749. The restaurant is located

I'd recommend George's at the Cove, 1250 Prospect, La Jolla. While
definitely not Mexican or particularly seafood, it is one of the
better restaurants in the county. [In the spirit of full disclosure, I
should mention that my SO does occasional graphics for them and the
chef, Scotty Meskan, is a friend. I personally have no financial
connection with George's and have been a fan of the place since before
I knew Scotty or began seeing my SO] It isn't exactly cheap but, IMHO,
good value. There are really three parts to George's, the full up
restaurant, the bar, where they serve a limited bar-type menu, and the
Terrace, which is more casual. The Terrace has an incredible view of
the cove and when it is sunny is a license to print money (I *wish* I
 had a financial interest!).

There are a couple of places along Prospect that I am not personally
thrilled with, though your mileage may certainly vary. They are El
Crab Catcher (infested with yuppies), Alfonso's (okay Mexican but not
worth the usually fairly long wait), and Jose's (also okay Mexican but
 awfully damned noisy).

Alfonso's in La Jolla on Prospect Street for Mexican. For fish, you could
head up to Del Mar and try the Fish Market near the racetrack.
