I Ordered a 14" medium Sausage and Mushroom pizza at Frankie, Johnie and Louigee's Too in Mountain View last night. I ordered this, as opposed to pasta, because the sausage was advertised as their own hand made sausage. I know from experience that hand-made Italian sausage done right is one of the seven wonders of the gastronomic world. When the pizza arrived, it was the thickest monster pizza I'd seen yet in California (I'm partial to a more thin and crispy crust). But that was ok because I'm also a sucker for good bread, and very doughy pizza can be ok when done right. Anyway, the big disappointment was the sausage. It was barely done and quite grissly, typical of the haphazzardly constructed sausage pizza you find at chain pizza joints like Pizza Hut. The pizza sauce also had some problem, which was hard to identify. It's not that it tasted bad, but it just didn't blend right with the bready crust. It stood out too much and was very acidic, kind of like tomato sauce with some spices thrown in with no time to mingle. My wife had the Shrimp Fettuccini Portofino, which was most excellent. We will go back, but only for the pasta. My top two pizzas so far are: Mio Vicino's in Santa Clara, followed by Tony and Alba's. At Mio Viciono, the Italian sausage is *real* sliced Italian sausage, and I usually get the sausage pizza with roasted red bell peppers. Their bread is also quite superb. At Tony and Alba's, your best bet is a *thin* crust cheese pizza.
