Primarily to piss off all the CA bigots that seem to be currently infesting this group (where the hell did _they_ all come from suddenly?), but also to actually pass along some useful information, I thought I'd mention a pizza place that seems to serve NY style pizza. The pizza is thin and greasy. They seem to actually spice the sauce. If you order it by the slice, it gets a little scorched on the bottom. They even have dried oregano in a shaker, next to the hot pepper and garlic salt. Atmosphere is also authentic, with old Italy travel posters and menus on the walls. Pronto Pizza, Sunnyvale. Sign outside says "NY Pizza". Worth a look for the ex-pats in this crowd. Jim P.S. Non-NYers who aren't overcome with childhood nostalgia may wish to give this a miss, unless overcome by curiosity. If anything, it should cement the idea that everyone from the East is utterly insane. Now if only I could find a deli that thinks grease is a condiment, I'd be set.
San Francisco Bay Area, CA
NY Style Pizza
For NY Style Pizza, try Go Getter's (no joke) on Gough near Market in SF. The neighborhood may be a bit scary, but the pizza is good. They pre-prepare a bunch of pies and keep them in a warming oven. I thought this would make them taste awful, but they don't. They do have the requisite shakers of oregano, pepper, etc., and the prices are very reasonable. Let me know how you like it, if you try it. Howard

They have an excellent slow-cooked pork shoulder that sounds like what you are looking for. They give you a choice of a yellow, mustardy "Carolina" sauce (ok, but not great) , or an awful, cumin-laden red sauce. I opt for no sauce. The meat itself has a wonderful smoky flavor. Also try the brisket. They're at Polk & Broadway, SF.
