I agree on the wine. Sattui is probably the most popular picnic-ground winery in NV. Dean and Deluca or Oakville Grocery are good places to get elegant picnic supplies.

The CIA in the Greystoke Mansion [old Christian Brothers' winery] is a very interesting dining experience. Brix, despite somewhat ordinary food, has a fabulous winelist with fair prices. Don Giovanni, Pinot Blanc, and Domaine Chandon are also worth a try. [If you get in to the French Laundry, it will be a miracle.]

I agree with you about Sterling vineyard & disagree about Tra Vigne.

maybe we visited Tra Vigne on a busy night. it was sooooo slow; we waited more than 1/2 hr (probabl close to 45 min) despite we had reservation.

the food was decent but not great. maybe we had too high expectation cause we heard so many people raving about it.

If you're looking for a restaurant a little less fancy than the ones mentioned here so far, I went to the Rutherford Grill a year or so ago and enjoyed it. My brother and his family live in Napa and eat at the RG occasionally.

Ditto on Tra Vigne. The food was mediocre at the best (given of course the expectation). I one restaurant that I really like is Terra. You can read the review and information at -
