Pete,

You made no mention of your price range, but here are a few suggestions anyway.

In Pacific Grove, try El Cocodrilo. It is a very good Central American / Mexican restaturant. Fun atmosphere, maybe $15 entrees and expect a wait.

If you have time for a high end meal, try Pacific's Edge in the Highland Inn. It is off Rt.1 just south of Carmel. Beautiful views of the ocean and terrific food. They have a Sunday brunch which is spectacular and dinners are either a la carte, or my recommendation, a four course prix fixe at $40pp or $60pp with a seperate wine with each course. The bruch is also about $40 for buffet service.

There are lots of restaturants in Carmel, but sorry, no particular recommendations. In downtown Monterey, there is a good French bakery, Montmarte, that I recommend for a quicker, less expensive breakfast. I think they also have sandwiches for lunch, but never tried it.

These are the ones that come to mind now. I'll keep an eye on the group and comment on anybody else's suggestions.

Enjoy,

Ed

Let me second the Pacific's Edge. I stayed at the Highland Inn on my last visit to Carmel, and the food, ambiance, and view were all outstanding. If you're looking for a romantic place to stay in Carmel this inn is not to be missed.

IMHO, Highlands Inn (in Carmel Highlands) is vastly overrated.

I do. :-)

La Boheme is one of my favorites. It serves European country kitchen style meals, table d'hote, meaning they only serve one menu item per evening (plus a rather uninteresting vegegarian plate if you are so inclined, though, personally, I'd give it a miss and go to Tillie Gort's in Pacific Grove for veggie stuff), prix fixe. The place is
*tiny* and there is often a wait unless you get there early. They don't take reservations. They're at 7th and Dolores, sort of. [Note: there are no street addresses in Carmel by the Sea, so directions tend to be somewhat vague.] Dinner only. The prices are moderate.

Q Point (I think I've got that right) comes highly recommended. I've never been there but I trust the tastebuds of my reporter. I believe that they are a bit pricier. Don't know the location offhand.

Flaherty's Fish Market is also pretty good and reasonably inexpensive. I like eating in the oyster bar section, which serves from more or less the same menu as the dining room, next door. A lot of locals hang out there.

If I had only one place to pick, I'd *definately* go to La Boheme.
