This was very much our experience of the place, too. Their reach greatly exceeded their grasp. My fish was seriously undercooked (cold and gelatinous inside), and nothing much came together the way it should have. I wouldn't have described the decor as 'shabby chic' -- I remember it as being rather nicer than that. More like 'funky elegant'. The space is now more colorful than it was in its Le Trou days -- eating there was like immersion in a bowl of custard. In a lot of ways this place reminded me of Val 21, with the same predilection for unlikely combinations, most of which don't work much better than they sound, though sometimes one encounters a knockout. At least they don't find a way to include chile peppers in everything, as Val 21 seems inclined to do. The service was very nice, though, and dessert was excellent. I think we'll probably go back eventually, but it didn't vault to the top of our list of regular dining establishments. Mangiafuoco, almost next door, is also well worth a visit for those living in that neighborhood. Very good pasta, nice people, colorful decor, but noisy and crowded. You have to be in that kind of mood.
