After several recommendations, a group of us decided to try this Neuvo Peruano spot on 17th between Valencia and Mission. My experience reads similarly to the capsule interview in the most recent SF Focus magazine: some great appetizers, but entrees run the gamut. We loved the Ceviche Limon, a generous mix of fish and shellfish surrounded by small piles of yam, hominy and roasted nuts for textural interest. At $13, it's designed to be shared. We also enjoyed the very generous shrimp (10 head-on shrimp for $9, in a city where 4 for $8 is standard) and mussel appetizers, but the huge tamal was a whole lot of chile-infused masa with only a bit of pork and one olive in the filling. My big disappointment? No anticuchos on the menu.

I enjoyed my entree, shellfish and perfectly cooked potatoes in a nicely spiced light cream sauce, but a similar dish topped with a piece of roasted halibut was overwhelmed by a sauce that seemed to consist mainly of paprika and salt. The arroz con mariscos was very tasty. The desserts were underwhelming: a banana bread pudding consisted of two thin slices (like a loaf cake) with what my sister swears was canned whip cream, and the tropical ice cream had a chalky texture.

Apps run $5-9, entrees are mostly shellfish and mostly $12-15. The wine list is well thought out, and the service is friendly and somewhat informal.

The reason I'm not likely to return? The absolutely overwhelming din. There's not one soft edge, not a piece of fabric in the place, and by 7:30 PM on a Sunday, I could barely maintain a conversation with the person across from me. Limon exceeded all our defenses, two-thirds through dinner most of our group of six had given up trying to talk to anyone but the person next to us.
