late night restaurants

Pulled out the handy Zagat, which has a list of late night places. Closing time is in parentheses. Comments are my own reaction and/or culled from Zagat and other sources.

Basta Pasta (1:00) 1268 Grant St., North Beach, 434-2248 Never been, but reputedly nothing special

Caffe Greco (1:00) 423 Columbus, North Beach, 397-6261 Not been. Zagat says menu is limited, but good for dessert.

Globe (1:00) 290 Pacific, north of Financial district, 391-4132. A hit since day one. Stylish, Mediterranean-influenced, not cheap.

Great Eastern (1:00) 649 Jackson, Chinatown, 986-2500. A big, popular Chinatown restaurant. Typical of that sort of thing. Don't go for decor or ambiance.

Infusion (1:00) 555 Second Street, South Park/South of Market, 543-2282. Stylish restaurant/bar noted for its infused vodkas. Food is inventive, but reportedly inconsistent. More upscale than all of above except Globe.

La Rondalla (3:00) 901 Valencia, the Mission, 647-7474. Cheap, tacky, fun Mexican.

Mel's Drive-In (1:00) 3355 Geary, Inner Richmond, 387-2255 and 2165 Lombard, the Marina, 921-2867 Genuine diner food, in all it's greasy glory, done respectably and respectfully. Recommended if you can stomach that kind of food.

Milano Pizzeria (1:00) 1330 Ninth Avenue, Inner Sunset, 665-3773. Nothing special.

Planet Hollywood (1:00) 2 Stockton Street, near Union Square, 421-7827. It is what it is. Food is not the point.

Tommy's Joynt (1:30) 1101 Geary, at Van Ness, 775-4216. Burgers and other food for carnivores. A scene but nothing special foodwise.

Yuet Lee (3:00) 1300 Stockton, Chinatown, 982-6020 and 3601 26th Street, the Mission, 5650-8998. Chinese seafood in downscale surroundings, but the food is praised by some. Probably a good bet.

Hope this helps. There are many other places out there, but few aspire to more than Denny's quality. Few barflies expect more.
