I found the staff to be very friendly (but not "Hi-I'm-Maria-I'll-be-your-server-would- you-like-to-hear-our-specials-tonight-we-have-special-menudo" friendly) and decently competent. The food, alas, was ordinary California-Mex. Not awful, but not as good as the nearby Palo Alto Sol.

About 15-20 years ago, I tried most of the Mexican restaurants in the Palo Alto area (not tacquerias). They ranged from poor to decent, and I concluded that Casa Isabel was at the top of that range. For example, they had seafood dishes not found at the others. (This was before Estrellita had initiated their Oaxacan-style specials.) For several years it was my default place. I only moved away from it when Chevy's opened in RWC. (On a local scale, Chevy's was quite good, I think, in its early years.) Of course, as you note, nowadays there are better options. I can't recall the last time I was at Casa Isabel.
