I've been to a *lot* of Italian restaurants in North Beach, and in my opinion, by far the best one is a little place called Trattoria Contadina on the corner of Mason and Union. 415-982-5728.

The food is unbelievable; and the service is always great. Enjoy!

Good luck,

Mike

P.S. Another reason that I love this place is that my favorite entree there
is a dish called Chicken Corelli (the Corelli's own the place), but they
took it off the menu! Nevertheless, whenever I go there, I ask if they
will make it for me, and they always do.

I'm getting hungry just thinking about it, and I just had lunch!

There is a great one called 'Ernestos' on Clement Street.

Meg,

OK, I'll describe the dish to you, but now you're going to make me all hungry again!

Chicken Corelli consists of a butterflied, boneless chicken breast (quite a big one, at that, cooked to juicy perfection). It is served in a rich porcini-mushroom cream sauce (oh, I'm dyin' here)... And on the side, in case you were regretting that you didn't order a pasta dish, is a side of fusilli pasta in a different light cream sauce (it's not the porcinis all over again) but rather tastes very light with a subtle cheese flavor (not parmesan, but a similar cheese).

I think it's probably hell on your arteries, but I don't care... It's well worth it, since I only get to treat myself to this a couple of times a year.

Enjoy it!

Mike (wondering if they have any open reservations for this evening).

my fave italian rest. (affordable italian rest., that is!) is 'green valley' - it has another name too. there's a little bar, with a restaurant attached. i think the bar is called green valley. anyway, it's on green street. just wonderful, family owned, atmosphere is perfect, as is the food. the antipasto is wonderful and they have pizzas and lovely lovely lovely ravioli.

i'm sorry i can't give more information. but . . . green street, just the next block up from jackson square, going *away* from broadway . . . glass front. candlelit, it's very romantic in an unassuming sort of way. one of my favorite treasures of the city, and RARELY a tourist, even though it's in north beach.

feel free to email me for more info . . . but this place is great.

I think you mean Sodinis (sp.), up from Washington square on Green between Grant and Columbus.
