I tried it once when it just opened. Its menu was standard to the point of boring. There was nothing interesting in the preparation of the dishes we ordered. It is quite convenient to where I live, but I wouldn't bother going there again.

Maybe they've improved since their opening days. Anybody have a more inspiring report?

I've tried "Passage to India" on El Camino, slightly north of Castro street in Mountain View, and enjoyed it very much. they have a weekly buffet which is ok, but they have excellent wheat naan, and a huge selection of other naans, and I enjoyed the mulagatawny soup very much. Their desserts are sticky and sweet. All in all a good home-style restaurant.
There are several other indian restaurants on Castro itself, but one
I tried for lunch was run-down and dirty, the other over-spiced all of their food, even the chai was enough to make you sweat! I don't remember names, just enough to know not to go back.
"Ghandi" in San Mateo on El Camino is just ok. They have a very nice
lentil-chicken soup, but that's all that seems outstanding.
For food very similar to Indian, but the finest I've seen prepared
yet was "Katmandu West" which actually is a Tibetan restaurant. They KNOW HOW TO COOK CHICKEN!!!!!! Their soup is spicy but only after about half the bowl is gone do you feel it. Their chai is the best of any of these places, no skin and a very pleasant blend. My personal favorite dish here is "charo ko ledo sakura' (or something similar to that) which is nearly identical to what Indian restaurants serve as "chicken Tikka Masala", but OH! the difference. The chicken is pre-grilled, but remains moist, the sauce is delightful and I usually have it with the fancier rice with peas and cashews (watch out for cloves or cinnamon bark in the rice). Katmandu is near the corner of Hollenbeck and Homestead, near the 31 flavors and behind the Mcdonald's, sort of. It's clean, and the service is more like a fine French restaurant than any of the other Indian placed I've been to.

I like India Cookhouse on Castro in Mt. View the best.

Its been a year or two since I've been there but the Royal Taj on Snell and Blossom Hill in San Jose and The Royal Taj on Camden at 17 in San Jose are/were pretty goo, too.
