It might be a bit far, but Furama in Warm Springs district is a decent Chinese restaurant. Nicely furnished room too.

There is a Cantonese restaurant which is in the same building as Fremont's Barns & Noble Books. It is around a corner from the book store. Across the street from The Hub shopping center. This restaurant is pretty good.

In the neighborhood of Decoto Road and 880 is a Chinese restaurant called Phoenix Garden which is also pretty good.

In the same neighborhood is tiny "My Thai." Pretty good, but a lot of the dishes are similar to each other, so you won't want to visit too frequently. It passes this basic test: if you ask for spicy, then by golly you'll get spicy.

Newark has a shopping mall called "Lido" and inside is a Chinese restaurant (Lido Garden?) which is pretty good.

You mentioned Chevy's. El Torito (near Lake Elizabeth) is a typical chain restaurant, but much better than Fremont's Chevy's. The salsa and sauces at Chevy's make me want to cry.

I've heard good things about Pearl (California cuisine?). Would someone please comment on this, I'm curious. It's in Irvington district.

Ho hum, we certainly don't choose to live in Fremont for the excitement.

Pearl's has a pretty loyal following. I used to go there every couple of weeks, but that's now down to about every other month. Not because I've been disappointed, but more because there are other restaurants I frequent as well.

I like their bread, soups and salads. Their main dishes are creative and generally a good value for the money. Good preparation, etc. I don't like their desserts.

Wine list is so-so, but has a few good choices. I had a Coppola Rosso there lst time (it was a '95) that turned out to be rather good.

Do you have any comments on Fellini O, located near the NewPark Mall? I know it's Newark, but since Newark's completely surrounded by Fremont, I look at it as just another district of Fremont.

For Mexican I usually go to La Casita (on Fremont Blvd., just south of the five corners) or Jarrito on Washington just east of 680. Chevy's and El Torito are just not quite right....

Pearls is a great 5 star in Fremont. Pricey but great food.

Massimo's is another Itialian/Continental in Fremont. Very pricey. Food quality has gone down hill in my opinion.

Spin a Yarn on Warm Springs Ave (half mile north of Frys Electronics) is outstanding. Prices are reasonable and service is great. It is owned by the former chef and maitre'd of Scomas in SF..

  Thanks for the info.

I did try Furama for Dim-Sum a while back. It was ok. But damn pricey.
I'm kind of used to eating Dim-Sum in L.A. and S.F., in Chinatown, and normally get away with a smaller bill.

Furama appears to overprice themselves. I'm certain it's because they
CAN! I mean, the place is almost always packed when I go by there. Certainly, if you're a Dim-Sum fan, like I am, you will pay the price.

I think Mission Jarrito is just okay. While it's close to where I live and we do go there now and again, the preparation of the food is a little sloppy. IMHO both Chevy's (in Newark, near NewPark Mall) and my own Mexican cooking are better!

> A few doors down from Mission Jarrito is Yen Ching Chinese Restaurant.

We have also tried Yen Ching, which we like better. A lot more effort goes into the preparation and service of food at this restaurant, which is also quieter. I prefer North China near Paseo Padre and Walnut just because they do spicy food better, but Yen Ching is quite decent.

Also try the coffee store in the Mission Valley shopping center near the intersection of Mission and Las Palmas. I patronize this place because it's locally owned and because the owners are quite friendly. For example, the first time I went in there, when I asked the owner where a pay phone was, he let me use his phone. The last time I went there, the owner left the cash register drawer open while he went to get my coffee! (I suggested to him that while he may recognize me, he doesn't know me *that* well.)
