Good timing for the question. I understand the Chronicle reviewed this restaurant today (11/12/97).

I've eaten there once. Sort of liked it. They had a lot of seafood dishes including quite a variety of raw oysters for those who are into that. Food tasted fresh. Portions small. Service was pleasant, if a little goofy. Took forever for our food to arrive. Interesting ambience --- tables are close together, but that seemed all right because we all started talking up and down the row of tables. Never seen a restaurant quite like that.

I understand they'll be adding a cigar lounge in the back soon and that will be a major draw. Not for me, but for some.

All in all, I'll be back (I live on the block), but it will not make it into my regular rotation.

Luckily they are not. Jose's is perhaps half Cuban at most, the rest may be good but isn't remotely what one should expect from a Cuban restaurant. I'll have to try the place under discussion sometime.

If you get down to San Jose, try Habana Cuba on Race Street between San Carlos and Park. Good home-style Cuban cooking. If you go for dinner,
*definitely* have the oxtails -- awesome house speciality. Not available at lunch unless you call ahead.

There is another Cuban restaurant in Japantown San Jose, Cuban International, that is just fine, but not IMO as good as Habana Cuba.

No, he's talking about the new place on California. La Bodeguita del Medio. It's quite good, and a lot more Cuban than Jose's. They have a good menu ranging from Cuban Sandwiches to fairly haute cocina. Oysters, too.
