There are MANY MANY good Chinese restaurants in SF..... try Tong Kiang (if I spell it right) for Dim Sum and dinner. it's on Geary Blvd. (cross street is 22nd ave.)

For Shanghai food, try Wu Kong inside the Rincoln center (on Mission and Main Streets in downtown SF). Their Shanghai food is out of this world.

Dang, as I feared. Too bad -- in 1992 they were great. Just as well I'm no longer working in that building...

Excellent dim sum and food that may remind you of HK cooking (or Ozzie import):

Hong Kong Villa, Clement and 25th Avenue, SF
Imperial Seafood, San Bruno and Borrows, SF
Canton Restaurant, Folsom, SF. (Smaller selection but fresh)

Another chopstick up for Ton Kiang.

Have never liked the dim sum here (I'm from HK). There's an odd aftertaste to it. Very much a business account restaurant. Their char siu tastes more like ham.

Can't confirm or refute this but one must know what to order at Harbor Village.

For Shanghai-style food, I found Wu Kong's food scrupulously fresh but not very interesting, admittedly on a test of only a couple of dishes, so not a statistically useful sample.

A fun place is DPD Restaurant (Kearny & Jackson, SF). The staff treats customers like family, and customers at different tables will often get into conversations with each other. Concentrate on the specials on the chalkboard or in the Shanghai section of the menu, and it's hard to go wrong. Only minus is zero ambiance.

China First (5th and Clement, SF) has scrupulously fresh and interesting Shanghai and Szechwan food. Order only off the Chinese menu, which is completely different from the English menu. I can recommend the clay pot fish with "sour" vegetables, although that's Szechwan, not Shanghai, and blisteringly hot at that (courtesy of four whole chilis at the bottom) (menu chars at http://www.cabelov.com/sf/cf3col41.gif ). I'm not sure what their vegetarian goose is called, but I've had something there that looked like it and tasted good. They sometimes have fresh bamboo shoots as an appetizer, and it has no relation to the stuff that comes in cans -- delish!
