Hi -

I was wondering if we could start a new thread on cheap dives in the Bay Area. I've been to many of the expensive restaurants in this food conscious city, ie LuLu's, Zuni's, Le Boulevard, etc. but have also enjoyed some cheap dives in the area that benefit from the availability of fresh produce. My favorites are:

Vi's (Oakland) great vietnamese food. Alice Waters eats there Gugliemo's (Oakland) best pizza unpretentious, red/white check table cloths with a real brick oven! Asiago/lemon/ anchovy and gruyere/proscuitto are my favorites.

Any other suggestions!

I have to say Skipolini's in Clayton is the best pizza in the Bay Area. In fact, I insist on going there every time I am in the area.

Sam Woo's is a delicious dive in SF Chinatown.

And I wish I could remember the name of it ... but there is a heluva great Mexican restaurant in Berkeley that no one would find unless they were taken to
