My favorite Indian restaurant is Sabina's, in Oakland. It has the absolutely best Indian food I've had in the Bay Area. Try specially their lamb pasanda, their chicken tika masala or the spinach-curry (I forgot the name). They are heavenly. Take care, Marga

Let me know, when you find one - OK ? Someone suggested Darbar Indian Cusine, at 129 Lytton Avenue. I went there the other day with a friend, and thought it was ok. They have an all you can eat buffet with a pleasant selection. The curry was more mild then I had expected, but I still thought it was all very nice. My friend actually drove us last time, but Lycos says: at the end of Palm Dr. go northeast on University Ave., go right on Alma, and then right on Lytton Ave. to 129. As I recall, it was very close, probably within a mile or two of campus. It is close to that Gelatio place across from the Aquarius Theatre. Darbar seems to be very popular with the lunch crowd, so I would advise getting there before the noon rush. :) Jim

We tried the Punjab in the Soho/WestEnd/Bloomsbury area and it was OK but nothing special. It is often mentioned in the guide books. We had a very good Indian meal at a place in Kew Gardens, outside London. The restaurant advertised "haute Indian" and delivered on delicate and distinctive flavors.
Don't know about good (or if such even exists in the culinary desert of England), but I can certainly report on a "bad"... Stay far away from "Bombay" in Kensington, despite the recommendation in Fromer's that brought us there. The food was no better than mediocre by NYC standards, and the cost incredibly high. We spent close to $100 for small quantities of food. A very small bowl of simply flavored rice (a free and expected adjunct to Indian food at all other Indian places) was about $5.00. Place was well appointed and the waiters appropriately obsequious...but not helpful. Sadly, the rule I first learned over thirty years ago still applies...pack some cans of tuna when traveling to England. Darbar on Lytton is pretty good, although not excellent. They have a lunch buffet. There's also Janta a couple of blocks past Darbar, but I've never eaten there. Leslie Johnston Stanford University

The service was excellent. They gave me a huge bowl of rice, a little more than I really wanted, and when I finished it, the waitress immediately came up and said "More rice, sir?" 8^)
