Best Burgers in Bay Area

This is for all you burger-lovers in the Bay Area. There is this
little diner place called "Val's" in Hayward (between Oakland and Fremont in the East Bay) that serves up probably the best burgers, fries and shakes ever made. The place was built in 1958 and has not been changed much. It reminds you of a diner from that time period. The service is exceptional and the prices are average. But, the food... Oh my. I travel 40 minutes from the the Peninsula to go there all the time.
However, since the place is small, if you go during peak dining
hours, a 20 minute to 1+ hour wait might be waiting for you. It's worth it, though.
If you love grilled onions, you will die over these ones. And the
shakes are thick and plentiful.. and the fries are big and crispy.
(I sound like the owner of the place promoting the store, huh?
But, the business is so good, why would he need to promote it any more? This is just a recommendation to you all!!)
As a backup to my claims, I would have you take a look at this
month's new Sunset magazine. (I think Feb edition) It rated Val's the best buger place in the WEST - from Alaska to Texas!!
To get there you take the Center Street Exit off of 580 (close to
238/580/880 interchange) and head South on Center. It will be on your left about a 1/2 mile down. Call ahead, anyway, though.
Any other comments about burgers or Val's let me know!! I've
tried most of them in the Bay Area and this place is the best.

Funny. I was showing my sociology major sister how to use UNIX to read news and send mail, and we came across this article. Val's is a family tradition in our family. We live about 30 miles from it, and every once in a while, we'd make a family trip to Val's for dinner. I want to emphasize two things about Val's:

      1) The burgers are large. Keep it in mind when ordering.

      2) The shakes are fantastic. Very thick, and also very large.

I haven't experimented as widely as you have, but I'll second your claim that Val's has the best burgers I've ever had. A really good restaurant with a great ambiance. Check it out!
