Try some of the indian restaurants in the area. Swagat's has a nice lunch buffet and Passage to India also does dinner buffets. Definitely more interesting that Fresh Choice!

Plug for my favorite Thai place:
Thai Sathay, in San Mateo on 4th near El Camino, has a lunch buffet with Champaigne for less than $10 (maybe even <$8?) every Sunday. I'm a vegetarian and vegetarian choices are only a small part of their menu and hardly their main concern considering that they practically aren't represented in their buffet, yet everything that I tried there was consistently good and often excellent. Non-veggie friends also seem to be happy to come back. Very nice owner if you'll have a chance to chat with him.
