Other great places in Napa/St. Helena Area:

Brix, Yountville--similar to Roy's of Hawaii, sensational.

Terra, St. Helena--perfect food.

Tra Vigne, St. Helena--marvelous Italian. Eat outside if you can.

Auberge du Soleil, on Silverado Trail, Rutherford, near St. Helena--wonderful food with an incredible view of the valley. (Serves heavenly breakfast)

Taylor's Refresher--great old-fashioned burger place with grassy picnic area. Perfect for a hot day.

If you get to Healdsburg:

Ralph's Bistro. Wonderful. If it were in the Napa Valley it would be as well known as the others mentioned. [email removed]

Hi-

In San Fran:
McKormick's&Kuleto's (seafood, great view of the bay) Millenium (vegetarian) LuLu's Hawthorne Lane

in upper napa valley:
Terra (in St Helena)
John Ash (in Santa Rosa-mid Sonoma valley)
Tre Vigne (St Helena)

Have fun!

While I'd agree that Terra and Tra Vigne are terrific, John Ash, not bad, at least two of the San Francisco choices are off the mark. Lulu's has definitely lost its edge (no one I know can understand why Michael Bauer recently gave it such a glowing recommendation), but depending on where you live, it might be unusual enough to be fun to try.

McComick and Kuleto is another story, and a perfect example of the natives' rule: In San Francisco never expect good food anyplace with a great view, especially one of the water. Even with special attention M & K, because of management friends, dishes ranged from unspectacular to miserable. (Have you ever eaten anywhere where a dessert was so dreadful it had to be returned?)

Yes, I know the no view rule eliminates Fisherman's Wharf and the even worse Pier 39. If you feel compelled to eat at the Wharf, buy a walk-away seafood cocktail (even though at this time of the year seafood's likely frozen), then go somewhere else in town to eat.
