Slanted Door really as much French as Vietnamese Boulevard Pacific In the Pan Pacific Hotel near Union Square. I don't understand why this place isn't packed. You could probably walk in at 8pm on a Saturday and get a table. ? Catalan restaurant across from Moscone Center; also not very busy. It's across the street from Max's or Mel's, whatever that diner is. Other places which are very good, but not in the top rank for overall dining experience. These are places I'm happy to go to. Scala's Bistro good food, but noisy, and the table is never ready when they say it will be Zuni good food, more informal than you are probably looking for Woodward's ditto. Garden. Places which other people like, but I wouldn't bother with: Hawthorne Lane Food is good, but very expensive for what you get, and it was one of the noisiest places I've ever eaten. I would not go there again unless I had reason to think it would be empty and therefore not so deafening. Val 21 Flying Saucer I haven't eaten there, but the reports of bad are so frequent, both in this newsgroup and from people I know, that I'm not willing to risk it. Places I'd like to try: Ritz-Carleton Masa's Campton Place
San Francisco, CA
5 BEST RESTAURANTS IN S. F?

It's OK, but IMO Le Cheval in Oakland and Emerald Garden in SF both do *a lot* better. > Flying Saucer I haven't eaten there, but the reports of bad > are so frequent, both in this newsgroup and from > people I know, that I'm not willing to risk it. > Thanks for your "contempt prior to investigation." I've had exceptional food there on two occasions, so-so on a third. I'd go back. My five favorites (not "the best" as I haven't tried all the restaurants in SF - yet!): Firefly Fringale Masa's Laghi Swan Oyster Depot That's my two cents worth.
On 22 Dec 1997 01:21:37 GMT, in ba.food, [email removed] (Sean Yamamoto) shaped the electrons to say: > Masa's >The service _must_ be impeccable or it doesn't qualify. There are dozens >of restaurants that pump out great food but whose service absolutely sucks. The one and only time I went to Masa's I was VERY disappointed in the "service". The table next to us lit up a cigar and even after mentioning it to our waiter (who had delivered an ash tray to that table!) we were still subject to the cigar smoke for another 10 minutes until I took it upon myself to find the manager and complain again at which time they offered to move US to a different table! (In the same room even, only a few feet further away.) Coddling one set of customers (those that want to smoke regardless of the law in a section that is clearly non-smoking) at the expense of another is BAD service.

Swan's is amazing. Makes me weak in the knees just to think about their oysters and clams on the half-shell, accompanied by some thick chowder and tart sourdough dipped in olive oil. MMmmm. Plus, it's in my 'hood. Cheers, stan
