Thanks in advance How about JackStack BBQ is quite good ( and almost as renowned as Gates (who has I beleive 5 places scattered throughout the KC area). The Newest JAckstack is in the Crossroads District ( in the old "Freight House" area) near the Union Station. It's 2 doors down from Lydia's ( if you want to defray from good ol' Q and try some good italian). I don't know where you found your BBQ listings from but you may want to try the following: http://www.rbjb.com/rbjb/guide.htm Good Eatting!!

Someone from up 'noth tell him. It's nice out. But this is what a KC Northlander with a penchant for downtown would recommend for a few meals here: 1. Fiorella's Jack Stack Freight House down in Midtown - Zagat's has it best in the country for a reason. It's the only restaurant where I've ever thought the ribs were worth ordering. Most places just can't handle ribs. Their beans are fantastic, as are the cheesy potatoes. And anyplace that serves a whole grilled chicken breast topped with smoked pork is OK with me. But it ain't a joint, it's a restaurant, so it's not cheap. That's why you go to... 2. Bryant's or Gate's. The barbecue isn't the best in the country, but it's good, with a bbq joint atmosphere, and pay homage for the history if nothin' else. 3. I like Little Jake's Eat it and Beat it at 12th & Grand. It's a bbq joint and dammit, I love a bbq joint. Also, all of the Smoke Stacks are good (possibly because they're Fiorella-based) and there are a few around town now. I like Smoke House on North Oak. Also if you're downtown, Winslow's at the City Market doesn't suck, and you can get good micro-brew across the street at the River Market Brewing Company. BUT, I'd get the 'Que and then also get a steak at either Hereford House downtown or at Golden Ox down in the Bottoms. They both serve a nice, unpretentious, big honkin' steak that a grill purist loves. You know the kind of place - you walk in and just know that this place is all about beef. Wash 'em down with a Boulevard Pale Ale or Unfiltered Wheat. There ya go. PMM Gremlin Grill BBQ Team KC MO

I hope it stays that way; success can ruin a good bbq place. I haven't had Bates City BBQ yet - too far east, I guess. I live up north, so it's a good hour away. The closest I get to Bates City is Blue Springs, where my lil' brother always has something good to eat and plenty of beer. I'll add Bates City to the list, though. -- Pat

Gates....you get pretty much the same stuff at any of his places. KC is a myriade of different sauces......ya gotta try them all. Good eatting!

You've already received the key URL for KCQ. I was very disappointed with Arthur Bryant's. You almost have to go in homage to all the history there, but don't make it the key stop on your tour. Gate's is the other old name in KCQ, and I think it is quite a bit better than Arthur Bryant's, though also more commercialized. It may no longer exist, and it is a bit out of the way, but I really enjoyed a little place called The Filling Station. No history, almost no atmosphere, but pretty decent ribs. If you can find it, it might warrant a lunch stop. BFSON wrote: > I'm going to be in Kansas City next week (brrrrrr) and figure I will have 3 BBQ > meals.
