And don't forget Jimmy's and John Wayne's, both in Lexington. Jimmy's is the best NC-style Q I've ever had. Usual disclaimer: I'm a Yankee.

To learn more of King's BBQ - visit www.deltasnake.com and click on the Hot BBQ link.

King's is totally old school family operated BBQ - they've been in business over 50 years in the same spot. It's the kind of place you can smell the hickory smoke a block before you get there. They offer hickory smoked pork pulled, minced or chopped on a bun, a BIG bun or plate. They chop, mince & pull it on a big table right inside the restaurant so you can see. They make the best homemade onion rings on the planet. They sell bottles of their sauce in plain unmarked bottles without labels for $2.50 a bottle and there are some humans I would kill for only half a bottle. :-) It is a vinegar based NC style sauce but does have some small bits of tomato in it along with a bunch of other secret spices & stuff they won't tell about. They don't sell tshirts or cookbooks. They toast there buns so they are warm and crisp and their meat is almost dry. You will see tiny flecks of red pepper in their meat. Served with or without homemade slaw.

I will say, that while I crave their BBQ sandwiches with liberal amounts of sauce, I am not a big fan of their ribs. They melt in your mouth and are tasty but it's their pork sandwich and plate that they are famous for. They simply have a way of getting they wood flavor into their meat that is sublime if you like a heavy hickory flavor like I do.

While I love NC style vinegar sauce for pork sandwiches - I like a more Texas style sauce for ribs and while I like good cue without sauce even - to me, unless it's a nice barky dryrub - ribs without sauce are like a movie without popcorn - give me ribs sticky & gooey with lotsa sauce or a nice crispy dryrub or both!

King's BBQ, Rt 1 South, Petersburg, VA
just 4 miles off I-95.
( There is or used to be another King's BBQ on Crater Rd near Petersburg but it was a different one and I don't even think they are still open anymore. ) The one on Rt 1 a block from the What-A-Burger ( for REAL cheeseburgers!) is the original one that is still going strong today!

I know BBQ is like religion and I'm not trying to convert anyone here - but if you like real deal NC vinegar style cue - you'll love King's BBQ. It's certainly among the very best we have here in neighboring Virginia.
