I don't remember the cross-street (but the next six posters will). There's a Thrifty and one of those auto parts places that are always attached to them ... Burnett's is a little take-out place in the same mini-mall. Genuine Texas BBQ ... very good. You can sit down in the courtyard and eat it if you want, but might as well just take it back home. With any luck at all Homer will be there himself and take your order. Excellent.

Good BBQ (Pas-Bbnk-Gldl area)?

NC style isn't really what I want, but it's better than nothing. Not quite Pasadena-Glendale-Burbank, but I've always been partial to Village BBQ at 11334 Moorpark St., just east of Tujunga Ave. in Studio City. The best BBQ in the San Fernando Valley is Dr. Hogly Wogly Tyler Texas BBQ, at 8136 N. Sepulveda in Van Nuys (just south of Roscoe).

Takeout only. Call first, because if Homer Burnett has a catering job or decides to take the day off, he doesn't open. He's always closed Sundays, and maybe Mondays too. Bob Finn [email removed]

We hated it, and couldn't see how the Pasadena Weekly could call : them good BBQ! You got that right! I never understood the attraction either. It's got its history, but that stuff they call food is not good. : We have found one semi-decent place in downtown LA, called Buns. Buns, long a favorite hangout of cops and firemen as well as others, is now closed all the time. Sorry. Dave

Great ribs >cooked to perfection, great sauce, with a serious "hot" variety, and >Burnett himself is a real character. I can recommend the sweet potato pies >for dessert. I'll add my recommendations for Burnett's. It is clearly the best BBQ place in the Pasadena area...bar none, with no doubt whatsoever. I'm almost certain that he serves Southern style BBQ, and not Texan, however. Burnett himself is from Mississippi. I'm not sure I've ever had Texas BBQ, but my roomate from Austin described it as based around large slabs of meat (such as a side of beef), with a very long BBQing process. Burnett serves ribs, ham, and chipped-type meats which have been cooked with sauce. It's the same kind of BBQ that I used to get in St. Louis. There are a couple of things you need to note about Burnett's. First, it's closed Sunday and Monday. Second, if he's not in for some reason then the place is also closed. Third, if you want ribs on a Saturday you should reserve them in advance. Another nice bonus for going to Burnett's is that Pastries by Nancy is right next door. IMHO, Pastries by Nancy is the best bakery in Pasadena. Like Burnett, Nancy is quite friendly and works her own counter. I think it adds something to be able to talk to the person who prepares your food. BTW, I agree that Burnett's sweet potato pies are excellent. So I generally get a mini-pie from Burnett and take something home from Nancy's. Aaron Packman [email removed]
The place you're referring to here in Burbank is
Pecos Bill's, it's near Griffith Park, just off
Sonora (I think) on Victory Blvd. My hubby loves
the "gravy" they put on their sandwiches...runs
right down your arm. :) Call before you go, sometimes
they put out their "Gone Fishin'" sign.
Another place you might want to try...have to drive
a bit further, is Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas
Bar-Be-Que (sic) on Sepulveda Blvd. in Van Nuys.
Their BBQ is THE best (I'm originally from Texas). They
don't put sauce on their meat, they serve it on the table.
They have a HOT and a mild BBQ sauce--you mix it to your
taste. Their BBQ tri-tip is to-die for. The place isn't
fancy--as a matter of fact it's not in the best part of
town, but we've never encountered any problems. They're
right off Balboa (off the San Diego Fwy). Coming from
the Burbank area, you'd want to turn right on Sepulveda
(going toward Los Angeles), they're on the left hand
side of the street--you'll have to look hard for the
place...again, it's small. They have two small dining
rooms. 8136 Sepulveda Blvd., Van Nuys (818) 782-2420.
