Charlotte is not the best place in NC for BBQ but we do have two good but not excellent places to go for NC western style. Western style in NC is defined as west of Lexington, NC and is made with a tomato instead of a vinegar based sauce. Vinegar based sauces are from eastern NC.

That settled, Carolina BBQ is clean and new - normally bad signs for a BBQ establishment - and is pretty good. The ribs are usually a good bet. Slaw and french fries are also good. For whatever reason the Carolina BBQ stores are always burning down, so check to make sure it's still standing before you drive. As of 14 May the location near Tyvola Road and I-77 South (relative to downtown) is open for business. They always burn down at night after closing so you can feel safe in eating at one.

The second and most recommended BBQ shop is Hickory House @ 4000 South I-85(once again relative to downtown). It's a small, hickory smoke smelling former house on the access road to the Interstate. The owner's name is Ricky and you can tell his BBQ is good by his size (sorry Ricky). They have beef but you don't come to a NC BBQ place for that, its the pork and maybe the chicken we eat. This is NC BBQ. Call ahead because after the latest "improvement" of the Interstate intersection @ Little Rock Road getting to this place is tricky. You can even request outside cut which gets you the heavy-duty carcinogenic pork. One warning, the french fries are really terrible.
