Atlanta BBQ

With out a doubt, the best BBQ in Atlanta is Alecks Hog Heven BBQ. It is located near the Georgia dome on Martin Luthor King Blvd. It's a tiny joint on the north side of MLK just a few blocks west of the dome so look carefully. The "come back sauce" is the finest. I have seen 10 people stand around an empty pan with white bread to get it when there was no "Q" left.Late afternoon is the best time to go unless your brave cause it ain't the greatest "hood". It is however the greatest BBQ.
If you go let me know how it was.

I always love Harolds BBQ. They have a location near the southlake mall and the best one is on University near the prison(just south of downtown)

There are a lot of good places out in the suburbs also(suprisingly) If you know whereabouts you will be I could get more specific.

Went to both "Alecks" and "Fat Matts" while I was in Atlanta both were very good, I would have to vote for Alecks if I had to. I believe the other BBQ house behind the pen is Harolds. I didn't make it there. Passed the Texas Rib Ranch on the way to Fat Matts, allmost stopped in, but I was more interested in a local style. Thanks for the advice

Our favorite place, Melears in Union City, has unfortunately closed and we are still in mourning.

Our second favorite is Fat Matt's Rib Shack on Piedmont, just south of where Cheshire Bridge Road joins Piedmont. They have ribs, pork, and Brunswick stew--the essentials--and often have live blues music in the evenings.

We have sent scouts to a place on Cheshire Bridge Road that looks promising, but I haven't been able to test it for myself yet.

Sprayberry's is about an hour south of Atlanta, with a brand spanking new location just off the interstate. They have good stuff, and they are well known for their canned Brunswick stew.

Harold's gets a lot of press, which makes me a little leery, and besides their overall menu is decidedly NOT traditional.

I would love to be clued in on any traditional places in the Atlanta suburbs. Traditional would call for shredded pork, truly smoked long and low, thin red tangy sauce, with Brunswick stew, white bread, potato chips, and pickles. And quart-sized glasses of tea packed with chipped ice.

For the absolute BEST...try Old South BBQ in Smyrna. Hole in wall joint but they do have the BEST!

I like Harold's on McDonough Street, near the Federal penitentiary. Good sandwiches and stew and you have to try the cracklin' cornbread. Some folks really like Williamson Bros. on Roswell Road in Marietta (pork is better than the ribs). Fat Matt's is pretty good as is the Rib Shack on Irby and I've had people telling me JR's is good, although I've never been there. Fresh-Aire in Jackson is wonderful and they also have a store in Macon, I believe. There was one great place on MLK (I can't remember the name) and Feeder's on Pharr Road is great.

Hope that helps!

Get thee down to Jackson, Georgia. About an hour drive south...east of I-85 if I remember. Can't remember the name of the place, but the bbq pork is out of this world. I lived in Hotlanta years ago...remember the Ol' South chain as being pretty good.

You're probably thinking of Fresh Aire BBQ. Quite right--its terrific! Another favorite of mine was Old Clinton BBQ House in Gray, Georgia (near Macon). Not quite as good as Fresh Aire, but pretty darn good, as I recall.

Another favorite was Sconyer's BBQ, over in Augusta. Its only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the lines are always long (get there early!). The bbq pork is really good, but the pork hash--sheer heaven on a plate!

I second the recommendation on Old Clinton BBQ. Check out my page on last summer's southern BBQ tour at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~thc/bbqtour/.

Fresh Aire it is! Mmmmmm...having a flashback as I write this! I recall trying Sconyer's one of the few times I was in Augusta on the right day. It was yummy!

Fresh Air stinks I don't see how they can get by calling it BBQ. They BOIL the meat NO Flavor. Try Holt brothers on Jimmy Carter Blv. in Norcross, They have won the BBQ cook off at Stone Mt. You can even see the smoke stack. Donna M. wrote in message ...

Lots of folks on this list disagree with you, Sandra! Fresh Aire is quite tasty (both their original Jackson, GA, location and the franchise in Macon). You're welcome to your opinions but this bbq-holic prefers Fresh Aire to Holts any ole' day!

Donna

(Kinda missing southern bbq right now, up here in ice cold D.C....)
