The man mumbled something about the large platter of BBQ chicken, ribs and fixings in front of him, and I knew I'd come to the right place. Back Porch BBQ is, naturally, situated on a back porch. Follow the mural that says "BBQ" around to the back parking lot. There's a pleasant outdoor patio, lined with flower pots and picnic tables with gingham tablecloths. Order at the window, where Dennis Long dishes out generous portions of mouth-watering barbecue. The pork sandwich ($6.95) was the clear favorite at our table. After biting into the tender slices of smoked pork tucked into a French roll, we each released long, happy sighs. The full slab of baby back ribs were meaty and not overdone ($18.95), though not as tender as we would have liked. The ribs came with corn on the cob, cornbread and your choice of two sides. We sampled a number of sides, settling on potato salad and cole slaw as the best. Baked beans were on the sweet side and overcooked. The sauces come in four levels: mild, spicy, turbo and nitro. We tried spicy and turbo, and enjoyed their vinegary kick. Order barbecue baby back ribs, beef brisket or chicken in combo dinners or by the pound. Sandwiches are reasonably priced at $4.95 for hot link and $6.95 for smoked sliced beef. Back Porch BBQ, 6459 California Ave. S.W., 206-932-7427. Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. -- Phuong Le © 1998-2002 Seattle Post-Intelligencer
