Not too far from Bristol is one of the great BBQ places in America! Ridgewood Restaurant in Bluff City is outstanding. Thin shaved BBQ pork piled high with a heavenly sauce. People drive from miles around to go there. Usually a line to get in and at busy times, they close the door at 8:30 pm (I think) and if you aren't through the outside doors at that time you aren't allowed in. It is worth the drive and the wait. Difficult to find -- not much in the way of signs but its on the road (Route 19E) between Bluff City and Elizibethton.
