Make sure you go to the NORTH rim if you want to avoid "touristy" places. They have an excellent restaurant in the lodge.

There is not a whole lot to choose from. The nearest town on the south, Williams is a typical travel stop, not a destination. All of the places in the area are family oriented and thus tourist ambiance. If you have some time and plan on staying in Flagstaff or Nearby Sedona you will have more choices. My wife and I did that and we want to go back to Flagstaff/Sedona area, yet have no desire to revisit the Grand Canyon.

The El Tovar hotel's restaurant is very nice.
This is the restaurant in the nicest, fanciest,
most expensive hotel on the South Rim.
