I was recently in PHX in search of some good BBQ, if you're interested in MEAT I would recommend WALDO'S in MESA and also HAP'S (24th ST & JEFFERSON) in PHX. Both very low key (Hap's in a trailer in the parking lot of an auto repair shop, with one table outside), but the ribs are excellent.

Earl,

you asked about bbq contests in southern az. the only '96 az contest i'm aware of was a rib selling event in phoenix about april. next closest would probably be southern ca, or west tx.

steve friedkin (texaz grill in phoenix) did win a brisket award at terlingua, tx, and has a whole bar/restaurant full of funky texas chili/bbq stuff. i'm sure if you stop by, he'd talk bbq. all of this recent smoked prime rib discussion reminded me of steve's place, as that is one of their monday specialties.

how about bbq places in tucson? any you'd suggest?

In Scottsdale, for Thai, I'd recommend Melee's on Main Street. For Caribean you might try ZinZabar on Scottsdale Road and First St. For Ethiopian, in Phoenix, Lalibela at 8946 N 19th Avenue. For mideastern, on Scottsdale Road just north of Oak St is Apadana.
