Los Olivos in the Old Town Scottsdale area has some of the best Mexican food that I've ever tasted, anywhere ...

Dolly...

Although I responded differently via email, I have found a possible internet link for your questions regarding restaurants in Arizona. I am still 98% certain that there are no AZ.restaurant or AZ.food newsgroups, but have found a web address for the Arizona Republic which includes restaurant reviews by their Nikki Buchanan... fairly extensive, too.

Good luck! and remember you won't find much "tex-mex" in Arizona, but will find really good Sonoran!

As an update to my posting of a few weeks ago re Phoenix restaurants, I finally got to try Marilyn's, and I have to say it's one of the best gringo-mexican restaurants in town. I base this on the chips&salsa (the corn chips were perfect; the flour chips were a tad undercooked and greasy, but the kitchen had lost one of its stoves and was working one-armed, so to speak; the mild salsa was fresh and good, and the hot salsa mixed with it perfectly) and the Margaritas, which have to work for the place to be worth the time. Detriments: the beans are better at Serranno's, and I had a fish taco, which is always a tough order anywhere outside of Mexico (never had a good one north of the border, often get *fantastic* ones south of it...). Best mexican dish I've had in several years, though: the quesadilla sampler, consisting of four small quesadillas (made on folded 6" tortillas) with one each of chicken (really, really good chicken), seafood (real crab), beef, and a fiery chorizo I'd kill Zapata for. I split these with Laura, and she agrees it's the sort of thing you label "signature dish" if you do that sort of thing. A pitcher of margs was $17, and everything else for two hungry folks was $24.

It's a long way from my house, but I'm going to be getting cravings for those quesadillas every few months (okay, every few *minutes*).

Does anyone have a real story on why the alternate location closed? The one on Tatum above Cactus (the original) is still there, but the one in the Scottsdale Seville (at Scottsdale Rd. and Indian Bend Rd.--it's one of Fife Symington's unprofitable developments, incidentally) closed even though it was always packed (according to friends who've been in it).
