A leather case, often hinged and lined with velvet, protected the silvered copper plate and made the portrait easy to carry, which set daguerreotypes apart from the paintings and prints that came before them. The record does not name the sitter, so the image is best read as an example of everyday portraiture in the 1840s and 1850s, when a studio sitting was a real expense and each daguerreotype was a single, mirror-like original. Its place on a board for the Lincoln Home in Springfield, Illinois, points to the household and neighborhood life of that period, when families in the city were having such portraits made.
