The record gives only a surname, "Woodfill," and notes that the title comes from unverified caption data, so this is probably a portrait of Samuel Woodfill, the U.S. Army officer who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in France during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in October 1918. Woodfill became a widely known figure after the war, and news photographers often sought out such decorated veterans for pictures. The Bain News Service, which made and distributed this glass negative, operated in New York and supplied images to newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. The negative's exact date is not recorded, so the picture is best understood as a record of the postwar interest in American war heroes.
