Grand Haven in 1874 was feeling the effects of the Panic of 1873, which had broken the national credit markets that Michigan lumber towns depended on. Mill owners and dock hands who had counted on steady orders from Chicago and the Midwest faced slower sales, and many families along the river waited out a winter of uncertain wages. The town was still tied to the outside world by rail to Grand Rapids and by lake steamers that carried passengers and freight up and down the shore. A bird's-eye view drawn that year gives the most complete record of how the town was laid out at the time, with its churches, commercial blocks, and rows of homes set between the river and the lake. Residents would have recognized it as a place that had survived a boom in the timber trade and was now working out what came next.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Grand Haven, Michigan, drawn in 1874. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
