Printed on a cigar box label for the Choice Puffs brand, this piece shows three men gathered together, a pairing of product and sociable scene typical of the tobacco trade. Lithographed labels like this were pasted onto cigar boxes in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when manufacturers competed for shoppers with bright color and eye-catching figures. Scenes of well-dressed men at leisure were a common way to link smoking with fellowship and good taste. Today such labels survive as small, colorful records of how tobacco was sold and how advertisers imagined their customers.
