The title "G.M.S. Schulz" is the only identifying detail here, and the Library of Congress lists it as unverified, so we know little about the man or occasion it names. The picture survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the output of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its catalogers recorded no date, so the exact year of the exposure is unknown. Because the negative is a glass plate, its sharpness and tonal range reflect the photographic methods of its era.
