Berwick, Maine, in 1877 was a farming and mill town in York County, where the Salmon Falls River and its waterpower drove the mills that had anchored local work for generations. Residents of the towns along this stretch of river knew the district for its sawmills, its gristmills, and small factories turning out lumber and goods for nearby markets, while farms supplied produce and dairy to the villages. The decade after the Civil War had brought steady, if modest, growth, with churches, schools, and village stores forming the center of civic life. A bird's-eye view like this one shows how closely the houses, mill sites, and roads clustered around the water, the arrangement that shaped daily life and commerce in the community.
