Tallapoosa, the seat of nothing but a small community in Haralson County in the hills of northwest Georgia, was a farming town in 1892. Cotton was the foundation of its economy, and local growers were feeling the squeeze of low cotton prices that decade, a grievance that fed the Populist movement across rural Georgia in the early 1890s. The town took its name from the Tallapoosa River, which flows through Alabama and not past the town itself. Its stores, churches, and depot, where goods arrived and cotton left by rail, were the places residents knew best, and the map records each street and building as they stood at the time.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Tallapoosa, Georgia, drawn in 1892. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
