Its title points to a survey of how the book changed over time, moving from clay tablets and papyrus scrolls to the bound codex that replaced the scroll in the early centuries of the Common Era. Pages stacked and sewn along one edge made books easier to carry, read and cross-reference, and the codex became the standard form long before printing arrived. Johannes Gutenberg's movable-type press in the 1450s multiplied output, and later changes such as cheap paperbacks and digital text continued the story. Each stage answered a practical need, which is worth keeping in mind when looking at the sequence.
