A cornerstone ceremony marked the start of construction on the Bethany Carnegie Library in Lindsborg, Kansas, a town founded by Swedish immigrants in the late 1860s and closely tied to Bethany College. Andrew Carnegie's grants paid for hundreds of American public libraries in the early 1900s, and communities usually had to supply the site and commit to funding operating costs. Cornerstone laying was a formal civic event, often with speeches, music and fraternal ritual, so the photograph captures a moment when the town was investing publicly in its own future.
