The most striking feature of this color lithograph is its pairing of a cross with Easter eggs, two symbols that sit side by side to represent the crucifixion and the resurrection. Printed in 1877 and copyrighted by Gibson & Co. that year, it reflects the popularity of color lithography in the 1870s, when inexpensive chromolithographs made devotional and holiday imagery widely available. Eggs were long associated with new life, and by the late nineteenth century they had become common Easter motifs in both religious and domestic settings. The print shows how a single image could combine Christian symbolism with the seasonal customs of the day.
