St. Louis in 1894 was still feeling the effects of the Panic of 1893, though its factories and rail yards kept many families at work. That year the Union Station on Market Street opened as a large Romanesque Revival terminal where passengers from many lines could change trains, keeping its hotels and cab stands busy. Forest Park, on the city's western edge, was still taking shape, while the Missouri Botanical Garden founded by Henry Shaw drew visitors to its grounds on the south side. Residents measured their city by its streetcar lines, which by then reached new neighborhoods west and south of downtown.
