Few products of the period put their ingredient so plainly on display, and this advertisement places a sheep beside the name Agnine Oleum Lanae, Latin for "oil of wool." Lanolin, the fatty substance recovered from sheep's wool during processing, was valued in the nineteenth century as an emollient for chapped and irritated skin. Theodore Metcalf & Co. used rural imagery and scientific-sounding Latin to lend the preparation an air of purity and trust. The illustration does much of the selling, tying the product to a wholesome farm animal rather than to claims the text could not easily support.
