Unlike many pictures on this board, this glass negative shows cavalry in Portugal, though the record gives no date and its title is unverified, so the occasion and the riders' unit remain unknown. The Bain News Service, the New York agency George Grantham Bain founded around the turn of the twentieth century, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its glass plates often capture how mounted troops were still a visible part of European armies in that period. The posture of the horses and the riders' equipment are worth studying for clues about the era.
